Description

About the artwork: A beautiful sculpture “Hond” in bronze

Measurements: 24 x 27 cm

About the artist: With his outstretched, neutral figures devoid of arms, Peter Leyenaar (1923) has brought his own kind of humans to life. “Physically captured”, “Shy”, “Shoulder to shoulder” or “Independently together”: the key theme in his work is the interdependent relationship between people. It is obvious from the subject as well as the execution of his bronzes that this artist has an extraordinary expressive and creative capacity at his disposal. Although Leyenaar’s statues take up a relatively large amount of room they come across as light and airy.
The upward motion of the bodies and the tension between the interdependent figures provides a dynamic whole. From his need to depict light and non-static figures, Leyenaar soon substituted hewing stone for the formation of clay. Not to be separated from his love of classical ballet is his need to have his figures rise from the ground: they are often standing on their toes, or balancing around each other in vulnerable equilibrium.
